Professor Rubén Sevilla has been awarded the inaugural IACM Simo–Ladyzhenskaya Award, one of the most prestigious international distinctions for mid-career researchers in computational mechanics. Presented by the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM), the award recognises researchers who have made outstanding scientific contributions and demonstrate exceptional potential for continued leadership in the field.

Professor Sevilla is internationally recognised for pioneering advances in high-order numerical methods for the simulation of complex engineering problems. His research has significantly advanced discontinuous Galerkin methods, enabling highly accurate, robust and scalable solutions of partial differential equations across multiple disciplines. He has also made fundamental contributions to NURBS-enhanced finite elements, combining the exact geometric representation of computer-aided design with high-order numerical approximation to improve simulation fidelity and efficiency.

A major focus of his work has been overcoming one of the principal challenges in high-order simulation: the automatic generation of high-order meshes for complex geometries. His research has provided innovative algorithms and software that have helped make high-order methods practical for real-world engineering applications.

Professor Sevilla’s contributions have had a broad impact in computational fluid dynamics and computational electromagnetics, supporting the accurate simulation of compressible flows, wave propagation and electromagnetic scattering. His work bridges mathematical innovation and engineering practice, providing advanced computational technologies for academia and industry alike.

As the first recipient of the IACM Simo–Ladyzhenskaya Award, Professor Sevilla is recognised for research that continues to shape the future of computational science and engineering.

Mae’r Athro Rubén Sevilla wedi derbyn Gwobr Simo-Ladyzhenskaya gyntaf yr IACM, un o’r anrhydeddau rhyngwladol uchaf eu bri i ymchwilwyr canol gyrfa mewn mecaneg gyfrifiadol. Wedi’i chyflwyno gan y Gymdeithas Ryngwladol ar gyfer Mecaneg Gyfrifiadol (IACM), mae’r wobr yn cydnabod ymchwilwyr sydd wedi gwneud cyfraniadau gwyddonol rhagorol ac sy’n dangos potensial eithriadol ar gyfer arweinyddiaeth barhaus yn y maes.

Mae’r Athro Sevilla yn cael ei gydnabod yn rhyngwladol am ddatblygiadau arloesol mewn dulliau rhifiadol gradd uchel ar gyfer efelychu problemau peirianneg cymhleth. Mae ei ymchwil wedi datblygu dulliau Galerkin amharhaus yn sylweddol, gan roi atebion hynod gywir, cadarn, y gellir eu hehangu,  i hafaliadau differol rhannol ar draws sawl disgyblaeth. Mae hefyd wedi gwneud cyfraniadau pwysig at elfennau meidraidd â chymorth NURBS, gan gyfuno’r gynrychiolaeth geometrig fanwl gywir sy’n gysylltiedig â dylunio â chymorth cyfrifiadur â brasamcan rhifiadol gradd uchel i wella cywirdeb ac effeithlonrwydd efelychiad.

Un o brif nodau ei waith fu goresgyn un o’r prif heriau mewn efelychu gradd uchel: cynhyrchu rhwyllau gradd uchel yn awtomatig ar gyfer geometregau cymhleth. Mae ei ymchwil wedi creu algorithmau a meddalwedd arloesol sydd wedi helpu i wneud dulliau gradd uchel yn ymarferol ar gyfer cymwysiadau peirianneg yn y byd go iawn.
